A new book about the most beautiful wedding halls in Slovakia. They are like time capsules—just open them, and you’ll find art and design from 50 years ago. They might have gone unnoticed if not for the research of Sabina Jankovičová. Photographer Matej Hakár visited and documented them—from Bratislava to Sabinov, from Pernek to Čabraďský Vrbovok, from Strečno to Lazy pod Makytou. In the book, you can also read about the significance of ceremonies for society in a text by ethnologist Zuzana Beňušková, as well as the history of wedding fashion in an overview by curator Zuzana Dedík Šidlíková.

In 2022, the largest cultural and social facility in Slovakia, an icon of post-war modernism, was demolished at Trnavské Mýto in Bratislava. This building had served for barely 40 years, and authorities were considering its designation as a national cultural monument. How was it possible that it was demolished without approval for a new investment plan? The book by Henrieta Moravčíková and Peter Szalay analyzes the creation and demise of the House of Trade Unions, Technology, and Culture — renamed Istropolis in 1990. The book is accompanied by photographs from all stages of Istropolis’s existence. Ľubo Stacho photographed the opening in 1981, Hertha Hurnaus captured the utopia in 2004, Olja Triaška Stefanović documented the decay from 2018 to 2021, and Matej Hakár captured the demolition in 2022.

The great book of power plant architecture in Slovakia – from historic hydroelectric and thermal power plants to atomic machines. In Slovakia, there are still plants preserved today that function as living museums. They have remained unchanged since the time of the Titanic and continue to supply electricity to the grid as long as there are people to replace the parts. Industrial architecture historians Eva Belláková and Veronika Chládeková, together with photographer Matej Hakár, visited 21 selected facilities from Bratislava through Mochovce, Upper Nitra, Kremnica, Kežmarok, and Vojany. These facilities reflect the development of 20th-century architecture. However, environmental impact has become the new priority.
